28/08/2009 10:54:47

The World Aerobatic Championships 2009 will culminate this weekend in an action packed finale that will see the world’s greatest pilots showcase their dazzling talents across a range of technical and freestyle disciplines.

Visitors will also be wowed with a breathtaking display from the world famous Vulcan bomber while the high octane action will continue on the ground with the historic Silverstone circuit hosting the latest round of the British Touring Car Championships (BTCC)

The climax of the World Technical Championship takes place on Friday 28 August while the World Freestyle Championship will be held on Saturday 29. Both days promise to provide some of the most spectacular flying ever seen in this country with pilots battling it out for the coveted title of World Champion.

As a further attraction, Andy Green, the first person to break the sound barrier on land, will be bringing a scaled down model of the Bloodhound SSC, in which he hopes to set a 1000mph world record with his partner Richard Noble.

Regarded as the most popular display plane in the country, the enormous Avro Vulcan delta-winged Cold War bomber which was recently restored to flight, is sure to be one of the biggest draws of the weekend.

Jeff Zaltman, MD of Flying Aces, commented, “Spectators heading to Silverstone this Friday and Saturday are in for a thrilling show. The finale of the championships promises fantastic entertainment with spectacular displays of extreme skill and precision from the competing WAC pilots. Equally as exciting for aviation enthusiasts will be the arrival of the Vulcan bomber on Saturday. This is truly an honour and we’re thrilled as organisers to be able to host such a world renowned plane.  With Andy Green onsite with a model of his prototype Bloodhound SCC and the BTCC stars on track we really can guarantee a fantastic day out!”

The World Aerobatic Championships have returned to the UK for the first time since 1986 and have so far provided vivid demonstrations. The British team are hoping for a triumphal final two days of the competition.

Mark Jefferies, Team Mazda UK Pilot, said, “We would love to see as many supporters there to cheer us on as possible. There are  (repetition) extremely talented teams and individuals participating in the competition, but even so, the UK has a real chance of success. We will certainly be doing everything possible to ensure that we turn in great performances. I can promise that the spectators will be amazed at the flying skills on show from all the pilots!”
