The British Women Pilots’ Association (BWPA) has opened applications for six scholarships for 2017. The closing date is 15 April 2017 and applicants must be a full or associate member of the BWPA at the time of application.

Two scholarships are for £1,000 and available for any type of flying, from ballooning to helicopters. The BWPA Flying Start Scholarship is for new and very inexperienced pilots to gain their first qualifications, while the BWPA Flying High Scholarship is for more experienced pilots with at least a first qualification, to help them gain additional qualifications or pursue other activities to further their personal flying aims.

For women pilots with commercial ambitions, the BWPA CATS CLP/ATPL Scholarship, donated by CATS Aviation Training, Luton, covers the full value of their Groundschool CPL/ATPL (A or H) course. And two additional scholarships for 2017, the BWPA Bristol Groundschool ATPL Scholarships, have been donated by Bristol Groundschool, each covering half the value of their ATPL (A or H) course. The three commercial scholarships are for applicants who have at least a PPL (A) or (H), and relate to the ground school elements of a CPL or ATPL (A or H). Applicants must be capable of obtaining a Class 1 medical.

The sixth scholarship, new for 2017, is the BWPA Saul-Pooley Renewal or Revalidation Scholarship, valued at £500. Donated by Dorothy Saul-Pooley, it is aimed specifically at the renewal or revalidation of a lapsed licence or rating and available for fixed wing or rotary flying.

Applicants may apply for more than one scholarship, provided they satisfy the relevant criteria for each application. All applications must be made by email via the BWPA website and winners will be notified in late spring. The scholarship selection panels will comprise BWPA members and representatives from other relevant flying organisations.
