As part of the CAA’s plans to update the licensing system for the UK aviation industry, from early December 2017 the authority will introduce a new online e-Licensing system – initially for commercial pilots, with private pilot licensing to follow in 2018

Pilots will be able to make applications online and track progress through a personal portal account. Alongside the new e-Licensing portal, the counter service at the CAA’s Gatwick office will also change. Pilots who need to apply in person at the Gatwick HQ will be able to book dedicated time slots via a new fast-track appointment booking service, available from 11 December, replacing the current same-day counter service.

Licence holders will be able to book an appointment time-slot up to one month in advance and, subject to availability, up to 15:00 the day before an appointment is needed.

Two types of appointment will be available, bookable from 27 November 2017 via a dedicated phone line (+44(0)330 022 1922, 8.30-16.30 Monday to Friday): the optional fast-track appointment, or a support, or ‘checking’ service for an application being delivered to the CAA in person. Fast-track appointments will cost £100, in addition to the application fee as per the CAA Scheme of Charges, or £25 for the checking service. Once in place, same-day appointments may be offered at £200 and £50 respectively, subject to availability.

Applicants who do not wish to pay for a fast-track service can still choose to apply to have their licence issued by post, which takes around ten working days at no additional cost. Any specific licensing queries should be emailed to fclweb@caa.co.uk and cannot be answered using the checking service. Full terms and conditions are at caa.co.uk.
