Cirrus Aircraft welcomed the New Year by introducing the G6, ‘the smartest, safest and most advanced model ever’ of its SR20/22 series

By Mike Jerram

A key feature of the SR22 G6 is its all-new Cirrus Perspective+ flight deck. Based on Garmin’s latest G1000 NXi integrated platform, Perspective+ offers a tenfold increase in processing speed over previous Cirrus Perspective avionics, providing enhanced performance and safety capabilities usually found on advanced turbine aircraft flight decks, Cirrus says.

These include animated datalink weather, SurfaceWatch safety protection, payload management, visual approach capabilities and wireless database uploads. A new keypad controller has a QWERTY interface that allows pilots to make seamless transitions to the aircraft from smartphones, tablets or laptops. Perspective+ also has a new HOME key, instantly returning to the main navigating functions.

Externally, working with Whelen Engineering Cirrus has developed the dual strobe Spectra wingtip which incorporates ultra high performance LEDs behind one continuous lens, increasing brightness two-fold for better visibility on landings. Halo lighting automatically operates within 300ft of the surface and on the ground, while a pulsing ‘wing wag’ function that operates above that altitude maximizes visibility aloft.

The 2017 Cirrus SR20 also features the Perspective+ flight deck, LED wingtip lights, a new 215hp Lycoming IO-390 engine, and a 150lb increase in useful load.

‘G6 is the result of the most innovative, capable and feature-rich set of upgrades we have ever applied to the entire SR product line,’ said Todd Simmons, Cirrus President, Customer Experience.

‘Perspective+ instantly adds game-changing capabilities to G6, from connectivity to safety to navigation, and gives our owners and operators a completely elevated ground, pre-flight, cabin and in-flight experience.’
