Gamera II was created by a team of engineering students from the University of Maryland using carbon fibre, foam and balsa wood.
It is 60ft in length, with rotors of 42ft in diameter, and weighs 140lbs.
The team are hoping to win the American Helicopter Society International’s Igor I. Sikorsky Human Powered Helicopter Prize.
The prize – which is worth $250,000 – requires a 60 second flight at an altitude of 3m (10ft).
If confirmed, Gamera II’s record will smash the official record of 11.4 seconds, which was set by Gamera I last summer.
