Austro diesel aero engine production hits 1,000

Austro Engine recently manufactured its 1,000th 170hp AE300 turbocharged diesel, the economical jet-fuel buring engine fitted to Diamond’s single- and twin-engined aircraft.

Chief Executive Officer Jürgen Heinrich commented: “This AE300 symbolises a significant milestone, reflecting the engine’s quality and reliability... For 2015 we are working on an extended power version delivering 180hp.” AE300s have logged more than 480,000 flight hours, returning a 45 % lower fuel burn than conventional piston aircraft engines running on avgas, while producing significantly lower exhaust emissions and noise levels, Austro Engine claims.

A flight test of the AE300-powered Diamond DA40 NG (New Generation) appears in the March 2015 edition of Pilot magazine. Does up-rating from the original DA40 TDI’s 135hp to 170 transform the ‘diesel Diamond’? You will only discover the answer in Pilot!
