The misidentification of land features was the main cause of airspace infringement during 2012, according to the results of a survey by NATS.
The organisation surveyed nearly 400 pilots who had committed airspace infringements.
Misidentifying land features was identified as the top cause, followed by pilots distracted by workload, poor or incorrect pre-flight briefings, misreading maps and pilot complacency.
